Guitar Playing Robot

18 x 24 inces on 100# cover stock. Illustrated and color separated in house. Printed by Screwball Press. 2014

Brief: Design on spec by yours truly.

Description: One of my first multi-color screen print designs. I learned a lot of hard lessons on this one. For several years I had been drawing different guitar playing robots. When I was first introduced to screen printing, I knew I would want to print some of my robots. This design was printed for me by Steve Walters at Screwball Press in Chicago.

Since the print is 18 x 24, but my flatbed scanner is only 9 x 12, I drew a lot of sections independently and pieced them together in Photoshop. The print is only four colors, but the overlapping yellow on red gives orange and the overlapping red on purple gives a darker combination for shading on the guitar.

There are two main variants of the guitar playing robot: Standard and "Bad Bot". This is the latter. Admitedly I did not consider how much the engergy engulfed hand would look like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget. Below you can see how the colors look when separated.
